Avoid these 5 ‘Filipino things’ when working with Australians

August 2, 2022

Unlike Filipino companies, Australian business leaders and owners are not fond of titles. Of course, you must maintain respect and boundaries when talking to them, but remember that Aussie bosses are more comfortable when you drop the 'ma'am/sir.' After all, Australians are very kind and friendly, so if you want to break some ice between you and your AU team, make them feel that you're not putting them above you too much.

Filipino professionals can fit well in Australian businesses. This is because Filipinos are great English speakers, well-educated, and almost have the same timezone as Aussies. These factors make Filipinos-Australian corporate relationships easier and hassle-free. However, you should avoid some things to ensure an Australian team's happy and healthy working environment.

Drop the Ma'am/Sir

Unlike Filipino companies, Australian business leaders and owners are not fond of titles. Of course, you must maintain respect and boundaries when talking to them, but remember that Aussie bosses are more comfortable when you drop the 'ma'am/sir.' After all, Australians are very kind and friendly, so if you want to break some ice between you and your AU team, make them feel that you're not putting them above you too much.

Do not romanticize overworking

No business leaders want a lazy worker. However, don't expect them to see you so much better than your other teammates because you take overtime every day. To simplify, remember that Australians value an efficient staff or those who can finish their tasks on time—no need to overwork.

Forget hierarchies

Aussies have a remarkable trait of treating everyone as equals. Whether you're brainstorming with your seniors or boss, know they would love to hear your ideas. Do not think they will never listen to what you feel works best for the company because they are in a higher position. That's never an issue for Aussies!

Avoid 'Filipino time'

Are you always an hour late? Aussies value their time, so you should avoid attending meetings late. Being late is disrespectful and might be seen as lacking commitment.

Say goodbye to office dramas

No matter how nice and friendly Aussies are, they go to work for work. Unlike Filipinos, they do not enjoy gossiping about other people's lives, so do not try backstabbing your teammates because they won't tolerate that. After all, Aussies would expect you to be 100% professional at work.
